Finasteride | Cipla® Finpecia 1mg (30 Tablets)

Finasteride to treat Male Hair Loss

Finasteride was first introduced as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

In 1997, Merck was successful in obtaining FDA approval for a second indication of finasteride (1 mg) for treatment of Male Patterned Baldness, which was marketed under the brand name Propecia.

Finasteride stops the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which attacks the follicle. Cipla Pharmaceuticals then brought out a generic version of Propecia: Finpecia, available in South Africa.

Propecia/ Finpecia can only be used by men and should not be used by women or children.

FINPECIA Tablets are indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in MEN ONLY. Safety and efficacy have been demonstrated in men between the ages of 18 to 41 years with mild-to-moderate hair loss of the vertex and anterior mid-scalp area. FINPECIA Tablets are not indicated in women and children.

Finasteride, a synthetic 4-azasteroid substance, is a particular inhibitor of type II 5 alpha-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that transforms androgenic testosterone to 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone ( DHT). The administration of finasteride 1 mg reduces the concentration of scalp and serum DHT, an increase of which is thought to be responsible for male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).
