  • Together with leading compounding pharmacists, MHR has released a capsule which combines the oral finasteride with the added benefit of minoxidil. This allows you to be on both Finasteride (which blocks the conversion of testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone) and Minoxidil (which helps stimulate the follicle to produce hair), without the hassle of massaging a topical solution into the scalp. Low dose oral minoxidil for men is considered safe although caution is required in those with severe hypertension and cardiovascular risk. We recommend that any of our male patients with a history of heart conditions or severe hypertension discuss the treatment with their physicians before starting.

  • Finasteride was first introduced as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). In 1997, Merck was successful in obtaining FDA approval for a second indication of finasteride (1 mg) for treatment of Male Patterned Baldness, which was marketed under the brand name Propecia. Finasteride stops the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which attacks the follicle. Cipla Pharmaceuticals then brought out a generic version of Propecia: Finpecia, available in South Africa. Propecia/ Finpecia can only be used by men and should not be used by women or children.
